Tasty Cakes

I never thought I would enjoy a cake tasting.  I don’t care for cake myself, but James does so I thought I would at least enjoy it through his experience.  So we made the trek out to Denton to try some cakes, because a Saturday appointment opened up not a day after we contacted Candy Haven, so we jumped at the chance.

This place is pretty cool.  We had to wait just a bit for our consultation but I don’t think I have ever been in an actual full fledged bakery before, at least not one that focuses on confections and cakes.  The staff were super friendly and you could tell they had fun there.  We were then greeted by our consultant Ashley and ushered back to our cake consultation.

Ashley walked us through the basics of what they did and what our options were and after discussing what our vision was she left us to discuss by ourselves a bit as we sat in wonder at all of the options. So many details to consider from shape to tiers to colors to decorative sugar art, it’s enough to make you faint.

Then Ashley came back to serve us our Brunch of Champions as she called it.  All of their basic cake flavors with frosting and filling samples. Now even though I don’t like cake, I wasn’t about to pass up the experience.

So the cake flavors below are as follows starting at the 10 o’clock white cake going around: Amaretto, Basic White cake, Signature White Chocolate white cake, Chocolate & Signature white marble cake all w/butter creme icing, then Double Fudge, German Chocolate, Red Velvet with chocolate butter creme icing and finally Strawberry with butter creme icing. The fillings were a kind of vanilla custard, Lemon tart, raspberry, dulce de leche (kind of a mocha caramel),  strawberry and fudge in the middle.  Also she gave us some chocolate covered strawberries to sample.

For cake, these cakes were VERY good.  we did try them all but my favorites were the Signature, the Swirl and the Double Chocolate. My absolute favorite filling was the dulce de leche.  The slight salty caramel overtones just really complimented the white and chocolate cakes so well, the fudge being my second favorite. James was in heaven but we narrowed it down to our top 3 favorites.  Well, his mostly, I told him to take it and run as I’m not huge on cake but I think no matter what we will be happy with what we chose.

Overall I have to say Ashley really sold us on the whole thing.  She seemed really genuinely excited for us and to work with us.  She had great design ideas and was just our kind of people.  She was eclectic, fun and just a real joy to work with.  I know we are going to love our cake and we want to say a special thank you to those of you who made it a worry and stress free experience.
